Qu 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The magazine industry is a very important part of the media institution which is part of our everyday lives. In Britain, there are over 8000 magazines which can be categorized as either; consumer magazines, buisness magazines, customer magazines, staff magazines, newspaper supplements, magazines based on a specific topic, and acedemic journals.

My magazine is a consumer magazine, this is a general magazine which would be published in newsagents and available online. My magazine is similar to many magazines already on the market, such as 'Bliss', 'Sugar', and 'Cosmo Girl'. Although these are not music magazines, they are similar to the magazine I have designed in the way that they are styled. From the information I have found out on magazine publishers I would think that my magazine would be most likely to be published in a mainstream market, such as a supermarket or newsagents as it is similar to other magazines which are distributed in these places.

There are five main companies responsible for the publishing of magazines in Britain which are; Bauer, IPC, Dennis, Natmags and Conde Nast. I would say that my magazine is most likely to be published by IPC which has published magazines such as; 'NME', 'Look', and 'Marie Claire'. These magazines are all similar to my magazine, the target audience is roughly the same and the style and genre of magazine is similar as well.

Magazines make the main bulk of their profits from the selling of magazines and the advertisment. I would say that I would include a variety of advertisements inside my magazine, which would appeal to my readers, such as clothes, music, eg. itunes and ipods, make-up, and beauty products. These are things which I would expect to appeal to the audience as they are linked with what I would expect my target audience to want and aspire to get. Also, the target audience of my magazine is very simillar to myself, as I am roughly the same age and enjoy the same kinds of things I would expect the target audience of my magazine to enjoy. This helped me to decide on ideas for my magazine as I could compare myself to what I have decided to include in my magazine.
